Cyber attacks can cause data breaches and outages that stop production, lose money and damage supply chains.
Learn card: When attacks hit organisations
Cyber attacks can cause data breaches (data stolen or exposed) and outages (systems that stop working).
Outages can stop production, close shops or take services offline. Money is lost through lost sales, recovery costs and sometimes fines. Trust can take years to rebuild.
Organisations depend on each other through supply chains. When one is hit, its suppliers and customers can be affected too: shelves go empty, deliveries stop and other businesses lose money.

PP-4-CY-K2
National-security cyber threats come from groups or individuals who use digital technology to disrupt or get into systems the country depends on: infrastructure, institutions, services, the economy and public safety.
Learn card: National security threats
Some cyber threats put a whole country at risk. Groups or individuals can use digital technology to disrupt, damage or break into systems the nation depends on, such as energy, water, transport, health, banking, government and emergency services.
These are known as critical national infrastructure. An attack on them could affect public safety, the economy and people's daily lives.
The UK Government's National Security Strategy treats cyber security as a Tier 1 threat, among the most serious risks the country faces.
